Introduction to Thin Film Photovoltaics (2 days)

At the end of the course the participants will have an overview of many thin film photovoltaic (PV) technologies, their potentials and challenges, their outlooks for the future and their value chains.

The participants will understand, in general terms, the economic and other important aspects of the sector. Participants will be able to place the development of thin film PV both in the context of the PV industry and in the context of global energy demand.

Subjects during this 2-day course are:

Global energy demand and the PV industry
Energy supply and demand sorted by sources and regions
Potential of solar energy
Future scenarios for PV industry growth

Operating principle of solar cells

Different types of cells

PV systems
Examples
Investment considerations
Integration into energy infrastructure
Calculating investment, payback time and costs

Thin Film PV – processing, status, potential and economic aspects of:
Thin film Si cells
CdTe cells
CIGS cells
Dye-sensitized cells
Polymer cells

Participants then have the option of following our Technical or our Policy & Financial modules.

Technical:
Several characterization techniques applied to solar cells
Theory – principles of operation and interpretation of data
Practical – hands-on experience with:
Current-voltage (IV) measurements of thin film cells
Spectral response measurements of thin film cells

Policy & Financial:
Aiding the transition: Policy and the PV industry
Subsidizing the industry
Rules and regulations
Investment considerations
Production facilities
PV Systems

The course is given in English. German courses will be available in the future.
