Manufacturing & Quality Control (5 days)

At the end of the course the participants will have gained theoretical and practical knowledge about the processes used to produce crystalline silicon (x-Si) solar cells. They will have practical experience with many of the characterization tools used to diagnose problems in production.

Subject during this 5-day course are:

General overview of photovoltaic energy
History, economics, applications
Semiconductors
Semiconductor device physics

Industrial processing of x-Si cells: from wafer to cell, with theoretical background and quality control aspects of each step:

Texturing and saw damage removal
Application of emitter and diffusion
Glass removal
Deposition of antireflection coating
Metallization and firing
Edge isolation

Practical baseline run - make your own cells on ECN’s pilot line

Characterizing cells - theoretical background and practicals:
Texture (balance)
Quantum efficiency (spectral response and reflectivity)
Emitter (Sherescan)
Antireflection coating (reflectivity, FTIR, lifetime measurements)
Metallization and electrical problems (IV, LimoLIT, Corescan)

The course is given in English. German courses will be available in the future.
